Where are the open and legal trail areas at now within about a 4 hour drive of the Abingdon, VA area? There’s a lot of discussion about where to go, and it seems like a lot of stuff is closed but a lot of stuff is open too. Let’s look at trail areas for Trucks and ATV’s here. I’ve started a basic list and will update this list with anything that anyone posts up. I didn’t include website links, prices, etc because those typically change a lot so just wanted to create a basic list of the areas.

    Virginia:
Roanoke – Patterson Mountain OHV Trail – Closed
St Paul – Mountain View ATV Trail System (Spearhead) – Open, ATV Only, Permit Required
Haysi – Ridgeview (Spearhead) – Open, ATV Only, Permit Required
Grundy – Coal Canyon (Spearhead) – Open, ATV Only, Permit Required
Pennington Gap – Stone Mountain (Spearhead) – Open, ATV Only, Permit Required

Harlan – Black Mountain OHV Area – Open for ATV & Trucks, Permit Required
Harlan – Little Shepherd Trail – Open free for Trucks, No ATV
Harlan – Hensley Settlment – Open free for Trucks, No ATV
Hyden – Daniel Boone Trails – Open w/fee for ATV & Trucks
Bell County – Wilderness Trail Off Road Park – FREE for ATV & Trucks — NOW CLOSED

    Tennessee:
Elizabethton – Stoney Creek – Open for ATV
Erwin – Bumpus Cove – Closed
Sneedville – Chinquipin Off-Road Park – Free for Trucks, Designated Ride Weekends
Mountain City – Callalantee – Closed
Mountain City – Pond Mountain – Closed
Mountain City – Doe Mountain – Open w/fee for ATV, No Trucks
Oak Ridge – Coal Creek (aka Windrock) – Open w/fee for ATV & Trucks
Kingsport – Bays Mtn – Closed (Illegal anyhow)
Huntsville – Brimstone – Open w/fee for ATV’s, No Trucks
Huntsville – North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area – Open w/fee for ATV & Trucks
Erwin – Buffalo Mountain – Open ATV Trail, fee for parking each tow rig, No Trucks

Greeneville – Horse Creekk – Open for Trucks, No ATV’s
Summertown – Wheelin’ In the Country – Open w/fee for ATV & Trucks
Sweetwater – Redneck Resort – Open w/fee for ATV & Trucks
Pioneer – TWRA – Open w/fee (TN hunting license w/small game endorsment), ATV Only, No Trucks
Pioneer – Royal Blue – Open w/fee (TN hunting license w/small game endorsment), ATV Only, No Trucks
Johnson City – Buffalo Mountain – ATV Only, Free, 50″ width restriction
Johnson City – Cash Hollow – Free, ATV & Trucks, private land — NOW CLOSED

    West Virginia:
Various – Hatfield-McCoy Trails – Open for ATV’s, In Process of Building for Trucks

    North Carolina:
Troy – Uwharrie OHV Area – Open Apr-Dec w/fee for ATV & Trucks
Lenoir – Brown Mountain OHV Area – Open Apr-Dec w/fee for ATV & Trucks (2 truck trails)
Franklin – Wayehutta Trail System – Open Apr-Dec w/fee for ATV, No Trucks
Goldsboro – Busco Beach – Open w/fee for ATV & Trucks

    South Carolina:
Waterloo – Gulches Off Road Park – Open w/fee for ATV & Trucks

Basically, there’s a ton of places still to go and enjoy riding our Trucks/Jeeps or ATV/UTV’s within just a few hours drive of our local areas. Most come with a price, but we have to expect that anyhow for a legal area to ride. So help me get this list together, keep it updated, etc. Post as a reply and I’ll update my original post to keep this one going!

Hey guys, if all goes well I’m picking up a Teryx4 on Friday for my family. This list is really good. Was wondering about Buffalo Mountain in JC. From what I’ve ready the trails are 50″ trails. Has anyone rode down there with a SxS?

No, honestly haven’t ridden that trail yet. I heard it’s an OK trail though, kinda narrow in some spots but might make a good day trip. If you check it out post something back and let us know how it is!

Oh – and congratulations on the new SxS!

So I bought a Teryx4 on Thursday and took it to Mountainview on Saturday. After talking to my sister about where I had gone, she coincidentally saw a Facebook post from someone that says…

“Its an exciting time. Spearhead Trails is mapping out 125 miles of trail in Russell County with the help of our GIS system, I would like to thank <persons name> and crew for taking them on such a rainy day… They have informed me that little needs to be done. We need to get trail easements and that it’s the best trails they have seen, great for Jeeps and four wheelers. The other trail is between Hidden Valley lake and Laurel Bed lake could be good for equestrian and hiking…”

I really hope this comes to fruition… kinda curious where the first trail would be that they are talking about in Russell County.

Cool, yeah the Spearhead trail systems are getting pretty widespread now. They started just a few years ago with Mountain View and have expanded substantially from there. Granted, some of their trails are not the best (as in, one way in and one way out), but can be good fun trails. Hope they get something else open in Russell County, that’d be great for the area!

Wilderness Trail Offroad in KY is now closed.

Coal Canyon (Spearhead) is another VA trail you can add, located in Poplar Gap (Buchanan County, VA)

The trail listed as “Haysi – Buchanan-Dickenson Trail System (Spearhead)” is now officially called Ridgeview and is open to ATV only like other Spearhead trails.

The Pennington Gap trail is now called “Stone Mountain”.
